A rare giant salamander was discovered in a cave in China, measuring a whopping 4 feet 7 inches in length, and weighing in at over 100 pounds! Some are estimating the salamander to be 200 years old, although they are usually considered to reach 50 years old in captivity.

A Chinese giant salamander measuring 4 feet 7 inches long and weighing about 104 pounds was found in a cave in Chongqing in southwestern China.

According to People’s Daily Online, experts think it may exceed 200 years old, although the species is usually considered able to reach about 50 years, in captivity.

The Chinese salamander is the biggest amphibian in the world and is critically endangered. Slow-moving, with poor eyesight, the nocturnal creature lives in lakes and streams in mountainous sections of China and is under such serious threat thanks to habitat loss, pollution of its environment, and the fact that it is considered a delicacy in China.
