This is one of the craziest animals we’ve ever seen. Matamata turtles are an aquatic species of turtle from South America that is best known for its form of camouflage. The matamata has a head shaped like a large pointed leaf, bumps on its skin to break up its shape, and sharp ridges on its shell that look like leaf litter. They walk around on the bottom of slow moving streams and rivers instead of actually swimming like other water turtles. Instead of actively hunting, they sit still and wait for prey to come close, then the lunge forward with a very long neck and suck in the prey in the blink of and eye.
