On February 28, a homeowner in Anchorage, Alaska, noted a bird at their feeder that was “not from around here”. That bird, an ABA Code 4 Hawfinch, was seen again a few days later and has been regular since March 6.
The bird is visiting a feeder on Park Hills Circle in Anchorage. It continues to be seen into this week, and morning tends to be the best time.
Hawfinch is a considered a classic drift migrant in the western Aleutians in spring, where there are a number of records. It’s much rarer in the eastern Aleutians and the Bering Sea Islands. They are very rare on the mainland, however, and this represents only the 2nd record, the first of a bird overwintering in 2003-04.
