Click here to watch: Mortar shells from Syria hit Israel’s Golan Heights
The Israeli Golan Heights continued to feel the effects of Syria’s civil war, with two stray mortar shells from Syrian infighting landing in Israeli territory. No injuries or damage were immediately reported in the incident. DF soldiers were searching the area for the remains of the mortar shells, which exploded near the border fence with Syria. Mortar shells have accidentally landed in Israeli territory on a number of occasions during the span of fighting between Syrian rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar Assad. Last month, two IDF soldiers were lightly injured when a mortar shell landed near an IDF post in the Golan Heights. On that occasion, the IDF identified a Syrian army position responsible for the attack and destroyed it in cross-border fire.
Early in September, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon stressed that Israel would retaliate against every instance of fire from Syria in which the attacker was identified. “We destroy every source of fire that we identify shooting at our territory, deliberately or not,” he said.
