This is the time when the 2012 National Geographic Photo Contest has reached to its full enthusiasm. Half of the competition has finished but still enough time to participate in the competition before the November 30, 2012. From across the whole Earth more than 20,000 entries from 130 countries were submitted in last year’s competition by the photographers whether skilled or unskilled.
A panel of experts in the photography will judge the photographs on the basis of their creativity and photographic quality. There are three categories: People, Places and Nature in each of which there is a first place winner and a grand prizewinner as well. Following are the images sampled for the competition for each of the three categories, their caption information was given by the individual photographer: – Paula Nelson
1. DANCE (People) – A wonderful picture clicked in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, London when a female dancer rehearcing her movements for a performance. (Photo and caption by Tom Radenz/National Geographic Photo Contest)
2. ADRIFT (Nature) – It is the picture clicked after a heavy snow storm in when the penguins were undirected and lost their way to home. (Photo and Caption by Joshua Holko/National Geographic Photo Contest)
3. REFLECTING VANCOUVER (Places) – The photographer tucked by viewing the wonderful reflection of the nearby buildings in the glass of the Convention Center while strolling near the city district in Vancouver. (Photo and caption by Martha Katko/National Geographic Photo Contest)
4. GLACIER (Places) – This picture is giving a vivacious as present in some other world like heaven… ((Photo and caption by Rafael Urrutia/National Geographic Photo Contest)
5. AN EXPEDITION AMUNDSEN (People) - The group in the picture attempted to cross the Greenland using the path of the famous explorer Roald Amundsen, who used this path to prepare for his South Pole expedition in 1911. Amundsen was not able to cross the plateau and had to turn back due to bad weather. But this time it was organized in the form of a race that brings in the contestants to the Hardangervidda Mountainplateu, Norway.
The participants will race 100km across the plateau and will follow exactly the same route, still followed by the explorers today. The effort to cross Hardangervidda was just as life-threatening and difficult as capturing the South Pole as said allegedly by Roald Amundsen. 6. CRATER LAKE STORM AT SUNSET (Places) – This photograph was captured from Rim Village, about 1,000 feet above the lake’s surface, catering a straight-on vantage point of the storm. This wonderful picture is clicked when a setting sun creating a rare double rainbow and a thunderstorm whirling across the water at Crater Lake National Park. 7. HEAVENLY VIEW (Places) – The photographer is immersed in taking photo from the top of Mt.Yangbaeksan, South Korea, amazed by the Sea of clouds that enshrouded the city giving it an outstanding marvelous view. (Photo and caption by Sungjin Kim/National Geographic Photo Contest)
8. ENDEAVOUR FLIES OVER GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY (Places) – This is the picture of the last journey of the Space Shuttle Endeavour before forwarding to Los Angeles International Airport where it will be readied to be directed to its final destination at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles. 9. PELICAN, WALVIS BAY, NAMIBIA (Nature) – It was a wonderful moment of a marine sail in Walvis Bay, Namibia. This is the picture of pelican that snaffled a bite thrown from the boat clicked at that particular moment. 13. PREDATION UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL (Nature) -I undergo amazingly when millions of fish that were moving in synchrony due to the occurrence of predation besieged me. (Photo and caption by Fransisca Harlijanto/National Geographic Photo Contest)
14. HOME ALONE (Nature) – An amazing picture clicked at a breeding site on a Sri Lankan island off northwestern seas. The picture is of an offspring, a lonely chick, amongst the adult Great Crested Terns which was captured from a prone position, with a wide-angle lens. 15. GREAT WHITE, SUN LIGHT (Nature) – This picture was clicked right after when I released a breath through my respirator, sitting on the top of a submergible frozen cage, 30 feet below the surface, meanwhile a 15 foot Great White Shark passed overhead blocking out the sun. 18. MARIA AND RAUL (People) –The wonderful couple Raul and Maria was married in the year of the revolution, 1959. Central Havana is the apartment where they have spent a large part of their lives. They both live caring for each other as Raul is now blind and Marie spends much of her time looking after him. This is a late afternoon time when Marie is taking a nap while Raul is waiting for her to wake up while sitting in his rocking chair.
