Surreal Snaps of Indonesia by Photographer Hengki Koentjoro
Hengki Koentjoro was born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, in 1963. He is a graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California where he majored in film. He now lives in Jakarta where he specializes in fine art photography both underwater and on land.
He said Nature is my passion, she rarely let me down. Water in particular gives me deep inspiration within my soul. I try to spend as much time in nature as possible; this is the environment I feel comfortable with. Hengki photographs always in only black and white color. According to him black and white picture is easy to express my emotion in monochrome because B&W is more pliable and not restricted therefore more freedom.
He captured these out of breath, surreal photographs of the Southeast Asian landscape in locations like Java and Banten. Banten is the westernmost province of Indonesia on the island of Java.
Through his artist statement:
Photography is not just a way of expressing his most inner soul but also creating a window to the world where through his pictures the unseen and the unspoken can be grasped. Driven by the desire to explore the mystical beauty of nature, he develops his sense and sensibility through the elements of fine art photography. His freedom of expression is more reflected in the elaboration and exploration of black and white.
