  • This center has been shut down due to the death of an 18-year old American boy there, and the subsequent burying of his body, apparently by the shaman, who has been charged with murder.

Prior to this death, this shaman, and thus this center, had been cautioned and criticized for not taking care of visitors while they were under the influence. It is speculated that the young man may have died due to aspiration of vomit while being left alone, or that the shaman may have added other toxic herbs to the basic brew.

No one has died of ayahuasca itself so mismanagement of this “patient” had to have caused the problem. It is also possible that he did not know, or did not follow, the dietary and drug prohibitions prior to the ceremony.

The point of this post is not to alarm or cause fear of the use of ayahuasca in the right setting, by the properly prepared person. The point is, this is a powerful plant medicine, it is not a recreational drug, and as with any medical procedure, the patient must do his homework before partaking, must do it with a trustworthy organization and must not go at this naively.
