“Besso has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

The above is an excerpt from a letter Albert Einstein wrote to the family of a recently deceased colleague, Michele Besso. It’s important to cite Einstein when talking about time, since he was the man who referred to the concept of “time” as the fourth dimension.

Some years after Einstein put forth his theory of relativity, scientists began to view time as a dimension inextricably united with the three spatial dimensions already known. But unlike height, length and depth, time is difficult to represent graphically. Generally our body moves in the spatial direction in which we direct it; if we don’t move, our spatial coordinates remain constant. But even a rock “walks” through time. It is like going downhill in a car, being unable to stop its advance.

But are we always at the mercy of time, or might we have some ability to manipulate it? Science fiction has long captured our imagination with the idea of time machines, and for decades physicists have been looking for a way to break with the constant that forever ties humanity to the present. But so far, man seems unable to move himself at will through different historical epochs.

Many scientists have done experiments with seeing the past or future through human consciousness. Long accepted in psychic communities, precognition and retro-cognition are the capacities to see the future and past respectively. With a telescope we can see spatial coordinates at a great distance from where we are located. Likewise, many people affirm they can see a dimension in which the past and future coexist. However, to observe points on the fabric of time are one thing, to physically transcend it is something altogether different.

The Philadelphia Experiment

An experiment performed in Philadelphia on October 28 1943, is one of the most well-known with regard to the manipulation of space-time. Of course, even today many question the authenticity of what was revealed.

Apparently, the experiment’s objective was to make the USS Eldridge a naval destroyer totally invisible by means of modifying its magnetic field. Dr. Franklin Reno ran the experiment, employing Einstein’s theories (Einstein himself supposedly witnessed the experiment).

But something did not go according to plan. The immense ship disappeared from the waters of Philadelphia, reappeared twenty minutes later in Norfolk 375 miles away and somehow back to Philadelphia again a four hour voyage that would normally take a minimum of two days. When back in Philadelphia, the ship was wrapped in a greenish phosphorescence, and the crew were both mentally and physically ill. Some sailors were in a state of complete psychosis, others were burnt. Some were even stuck inside the walls and floors of the craft, as if in some moment of the experiment they had the capacity to pass through walls of the ship, and later the spell had suddenly broken. But what really happened? Where did they go during this unintended teleportation? Up to today there are hundreds of arguments that both affirm or refute the veracity of this experiment.

Chernobrov Time Machine

The Russian scientist, Vadim Chernobrov and his team conducted various experiments with time machines using electromagnetic pumping devices. Chernobrov began his projects in 1987 and managed to alter time slightly through a special magnetic impact. The greatest delay in time achieved was of one and a half seconds in one hour about 3 percent

In August of 2001, Chernobrov created another time machine model, which ran on car batteries, in a forest close to Volvogrado, Russia. He was registering the change in time with symmetric crystal oscillators and managed to slow time in that field by about 10 percent. Chernobrov and his collaborators put themselves in the machine’s field of influence and reported feeling that they were in two distinct places at the same time, as if some extra space had opened up. “I cannot describe the inconceivable emotions we experienced in those moments,” he said.

Do these experiments point to a future where one can travel in the dimension of time with the ease in which we traverse space? Or is the very nature of this fourth dimension such that we are forever bound by its laws? Science affirms that time travel is only possible when a particle’s velocity has surpassed the speed of light. But as the theory of relativity explains, as velocities approach that speed, an object’s mass would increase so much that it would be impossible to reach the barrier of light. However, some propose that such a journey might be possible through theoretical deformations of space-time known as wormholes. Whatever the case, time has shown that human genius never ceases to defy physical laws.

  • I feel like I just lost 10 minutes.

That’s the time it took to read this article.

Too bad I can’t be in two places at once.

    • It took you 10 minutes to read 11 paragraphs?? You can be in 2 places at once, you just need to work on your bi-location skills through your natural ability to alter your consciousness stream…
