Dogs can count and watch being treated equally fair too.
We have a English Pointer, Lucy and we recently got Scruffy, a little JaCairn Terrier.
You cannot and I mean CANNOT give Scruffy a kiss, scratch or treat that Lucy does not acutely watch, count and measure.
Either dog will pout and show displeasure if they think you are treating the other one better.

I hear ya, we have two boxers can tell if the other received more food just by the sound of the food hitting the dish.

One of the dogs has to take med’s, we use those pill pockets to deliver the med’s. Well just like the food, you have to give BOTH of them one, I thought I would be smart and just give to other dog a piece of his normal food since they look the same and I could save a pill pocket…….
It didnt work, he spit it out within seconds, so the next time I made sure to get the scent of the pill pocket on the piece of food…..I swore I heard him laugh as he spit it out
