Harry Coumnas Likes To Collect Dead Human Remains
A person’s skeleton is the most durable part of their remains. After the eyeballs flatten and liquefy, papery skin and tissue of a corpse slowly decay, the bones stay intact. Because of their longevity, bones are useful in different academic disciplines- archeology, anthropology, and medicine, to a name a few- to learn about human life and death which is perhaps why some people start bone collections.
Harry Coumnas has one of the most impressive private collections of human skeletal specimens. He traces his interest in bone collecting back to his childhood days. At present, he counts over hundred human skulls among his private collection of thousand of assorted items. When interviewed, Harry referred to his collection, his favorite specimens are the skulls found in Egypt which are 3000 years old. During vacations, rather than collecting human remains, he sources his items from de-acquisitioned museum collectors, medical schools, or other private collectors.
