We’ve all heard the phrase before….”When you assume, you make an @$$ out of you.” I recently received a gift from someone who made an assumption about what they thought they knew about me. For the sake of not putting my own business in the street, (check out Monday’s blog “Can You Keep A Secret?” to see what I mean) I’ll just say that the gift was extremely inappropriate. Granted, I don’t know this person that well, but I had to ask myself, “What about me makes them feel so comfortable to give this to someone?” or “What is it about them that makes them feel this is ok?” If I listen to Hip Hop music, does that mean I can’t hold an intelligent conversation? If I have a Hispanic background, should I automatically be a walking Spanish dictionary? If I have a disability, does that make me any less vibrant and energetic? Hopefully no one answered “Yes” to any of these questions. Although these are some in your face examples, do we all practice the unsavory art of guilty assumptions?
