On February 8th, 2013 at 3:50 pm a drone was sighted hovering above a neighborhood in West Oakland. Alameda County Against Drones (ACAD) will hold a meeting to protest the use of drones on February 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Alameda County Administration Building Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern has published policies covering his plans to use aerial drones in crime, fire, rescue and disaster operations.
The drone didn’t seem to be a focus, it just maintained it’s position above properties. It is not known at this point what agency or individual was operating the craft.(Though as of 2/9/2013 people online have claimed a civilian owns a drone in the area) The Almeda County drone policy can be found here: http://nomby.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/small-unmanned-aircraft-system-general-order-6-15-draft.pdf
Alameda Sheriff recently released their intended policies around the use of drones.
Once introduced into the Sheriff’s arsenal, they would be used for a variety of purposes ranging from counter terrorism operations, chases, search and rescue, surveillance, as well as other operations.
