The world’s largest Tibetan Buddhism School is located in the valley Larong in Garze, which is a Tibetan region in western Sichuan Province, about 400 miles away from Chengdu.

Around 40,000 monks live in the valley, mainly from Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu, and other Tibetan areas.

Individuals from Singapore, Hong Kong and elsewhere also go there for short-term study. There’s no television, no modern public toilets, and no heating.

It’s not a popular tourist spot, so getting there via the local roads isn’t easy. Only one bus goes there per day, starting from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The trip takes 15-16 hours on the bumpy winding mountain roads, and one-third it is in poor condition.

Also, the roads up into the mountain are often closed due to weather—the threat of landslides during the rainy season, or thick snow during winter. Even when the road is passable, entry to the zone may be banned at any time because it is a politically sensitive area.

Despite all those troubles, you will still want to visit this school after seeing the photos.
