In what must surely be a stunning setback for the president and his gun-control allies who keep pushing for stricter measures on the personal ownership and use of firearms, a major new survey shows that America says, basically, “forget about it.”
The Washington Examiner reports on a new poll from Pew Research Center that finds support for Americans’ gun rights is now at its highest point in the past quarter-century.
“Exactly two years after President Obama’s bid for gun control following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting died in Congress, a new poll has discovered a huge shift in public opinion to backing Second Amendment gun rights and away from controlling gun ownership.”
Just last week, Western Journalism told you about Obama’s pledge to “keep chipping away” at gun rights and Second Amendment protections in the face of an “unprecedented surge” in gun manufacturing in America — a surge in response to public demand for guns.
As our post noted, Obama’s presidency and personal appeals for tighter restrictions on gun sales and ownership have actually proven to be extremely positive for the firearms industry.
Now, with the Pew poll showing the public firmly believes that having a gun is the best way to protect against becoming a victim of crime, Obama’s anti-gun agenda appears to be backfiring big time.
“To say the shift in opinion is radical is not an understatement. It follows a short period where Americans were torn over gun ownership, but eventually sided with gun rights groups during the Obama years.”
Among the internals of the Pew Research analysis of Americans’ changing thoughts about guns is this interesting tidbit: “Support for gun control has dropped most dramatically among whites who see crime on the rise – just 37% of those who now say crime is increasing say they favor stricter gun control, compared with 78% who said the same in 1990.”
Given the political capital that President Obama and his avid gun-control allies have invested in trying to restrict Second Amendment rights, this latest shift in public opinion would seem to indicate that Americans find the president’s pleas on this hot-button issue increasingly irrelevant. It should also help explain why you will likely see few, if any, candidates for high elected office talking about gun control as we move deeper into the 2016 election cycle.
