The rough rollout of Hillary Clinton’s campaign continued this week, as the Daily Mail uncovered that the former Secretary of State’s meetings with “everyday Americans” are not as natural as her campaign staff would like the public to believe.
At a Monday stop at Kristin’s Bakery in Keene, New Hampshire, Clinton walked around the shop shaking hands and then sat down with three customers, with the media in tow to report the encounter.
When Clinton’s campaign communications director, Jennifer Palmieri, was asked whether the campaign had planted any of the customers in the bakery, she said, “I think maybe some of them, but I don’t know.”
New Hampshire’s WMUR-TV later reported that two of the people Clinton spoke with had been asked to come.
Perhaps the campaign was wise to plant some ringers among the customers, given the response some of Kristin’s Bakery staff had towards the candidate visit. Marcia DuBois, a cashier, recounted that “A few of the staff didn’t want to come out to meet Hillary. They just don’t like her.”
Another staff member thought it was a shame: ‘You may not agree with her. Okay. But you should respect the office she’s shooting for.’
This is not the first time the Clinton campaign has been caught bringing ringers in for the supposed listening tour-style meetings. Last week, Clinton sat for 30 minutes talking to Austin Bird and two others the campaign had driven in to a restaurant in the town of LeClaire, Iowa. Bird is a former Obama 2012 campaign intern and served as chauffeur to Vice President Joe Biden when he visited Iowa in October 2014.
Bird told the Daily Mail: “We were asked to come to a meeting with Troy [Price], the three of us, at the Village Inn.” He added that Price, Clinton’s Iowa state political director, grilled him for a half-an-hour before having him driven to meet with Clinton for a campaign stop at a coffee shop. He said two others who joined him were University of Iowa College Democrats president Carter Bell and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland employee Sara Sedlacek.
MSNBC’s Morning Joe took up the topic of Clinton’s staged encounters with “ordinary” Americans, with Scarborough saying: ““That reminds me of the New York Times reporter who went to the bathroom and staff member for Hillary followed her and stood outside the stall.”
“Do you think there is a little control freakishness happening?” co-host Mika Brzezinski wondered.
When pressed further about these campaign interactions with “everyday Americans,” Palmieri said, “We have to go after Democrats before we do anything else…Especially in Iowa, and New Hampshire.” She then finally admitted, “But sure. People are asked” to come.
Do you think the Clinton campaign should be leading the media and the public to believe these are true encounters with “everyday Americans”? Let us know your thoughts below.
