Congresswoman Duckworth shares perspectives on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA25)

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (8th U.S. Congressional District) shared her perspectives on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA25), observing its 25th anniversary in 2015, at Temple Beth-El in Northbrook with more than 200 people in attendance during a recent Shabbat service. The Congresswoman provided insights as to the progress made and challenges that remain in meeting the needs of the ability challenged, including Veterans, throughout the U.S.

“The ADA25 is partnering with organizations who have good practices in place for inclusion in their communities, as well as groups who are implementing major projects to promote inclusion for people with disabilities,” said Cantor Faryn H.K. Rudnick of Temple Beth-El, dedicated to welcoming all people, advocacy, and educating the community about inclusion. The synagogue’s application for partnership with ADA25 was accepted in February, 2015, during Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month.

“All of us at Temple Beth-El found the Congresswoman’s discussion on the Americans with Disabilities Act at 25, as well as the other legislation she has sponsored and supported for the disability community across the U.S., very informative and important” said Cantor Faryn H.K. Rudnick, who represents the American Conference of Cantors on the Jewish Disabilities Network Coalition. The Cantor also serves as chairperson for the congregation’s inclusion initiatives.

“Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth is an inspiration,” the Cantor added. “She is a dynamic leader who proves day in and day out that having a disability does not define you. Being a disabled veteran, the Congresswoman offers a unique perspective of what it is like to fall and then find the strength and courage to get back up. Her message is powerful and she reminds us all of the importance of inclusion and diversity in our communities.”

The Cantor points out that people with disabilities play a significant role in our society. “However, our society is not complete without the inclusion of every person. Once we begin to include everyone, we can truly be whole and work towards a better society where all voices are heard and each person can reach his/her full potential,” she added.

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth is an “outstanding and commanding speaker,” said Rabbi Sidney Helbraun of Temple Beth-El. “She speaks from the heart and shares her passion for inclusion and advocacy with great spirit,” the Rabbi emphasized. “She is gifted in many ways and is a teacher to us all about how to rethink inclusion and the vital need for inclusion.”
