Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced her presidential candidacy on Sunday; and since then, she has not given the press much of her time. She did, however, make an incognito appearance at an Ohio Chipotle where she spoke to nobody; she was then slammed by CNN and some on the right for avoiding public scrutiny.
Bill Burton, a former deputy press secretary in the Obama administration, joined Megyn Kelly on Wednesday night to discuss the Clinton communication team’s strategy. Kelly wondered if Clinton’s team was trying to keep her from speaking so as to not make things worse for her.
“What that tells me, tell me whether this is wrong,” Kelly said, “is the smart communications people are saying, ‘It is not to our advantage to put our candidate out there.’”
Burton argued that then-candidate Obama went through the same flak for not appearing often before the press, but added that Clinton’s campaign is just a few days old. He suggested that this could be deliberate on her part in light of Republican candidate Rand Paul facing some stiff opposition for going to the press right after his announcement.
Clinton has proven she is very calculated and well-scripted when she chooses to go to the press. She won’t likely walk into a situation without first knowing every question ahead of time, much like she did when she finally spoke to the press regarding the thousands of missing emails from her time as Secretary of State.
