The unidentified victim of a violent attempted rape shared her story with a jury this week. Recalling the August 2014 incident, she explained that she was walking home in Cheltenham, England, when a man suddenly grabbed her, held her down and told her to do exactly as he instructed.
She did not comply.
“I swore at him,” she said. “I think I said something like, ‘Go f—k yourself.’ Then he hit me again in the face. He was grabbing at my clothing.”
As soon as she recognized her attacker’s intent, she relied on her expertise as a kickboxer and training in self-defense techniques to fight back. At first, she attempted a triangle hold designed to restrict air flow, though that move was ultimately unsuccessful.
“I think he figured out what I was trying to do,” she explained, “because he managed to wriggle free and hit me again repeated in the face. I was stunned for a moment.”
The attack continued, she said, as the man attempted to remove her clothing.
“My legs were still free,” she recalled, “so I lifted my left leg up onto his shoulder and around the back of his neck.”
At this point, she began to gain the upper hand. After a few moments – during which the attacker continued to strike at her – she said his body went limp.
Her quick action, which led to Mark Willis’ arrest and subsequent conviction, earned high praise from the presiding judge. Not only did he publicly acknowledge her bravery, he commissioned a payment of 500 pounds as “a mark of the court’s gratitude.”
