During the question-and-answer session that followed her recent interview with Univision personality Jorge Ramos, conservative author Ann Coulter received an odd request from an illegal immigrant in the audience.
“So my first question is,” Gaby Pacheco began, “can I give you a hug?”
At first, Coulter offered a reasonable excuse for declining the invitation.
“I wouldn’t today,” she said. “I’m recovering from the worst flu I’ve ever had.”
The persistent Pacheco continued to press for a hug with the outspoken blonde.
“It’s OK,” she replied. “I’ll take your germs. This undocumented immigrant who has lived in this nation for almost 22 years wants to, as a sign of my humanity and yours, recognize you and say, ‘Can I give you a hug?’”
This time, Coulter refused more bluntly.
“No,” she responded. “Let’s get on with the question.”
The illegal immigrant responded to the rejection by dropping the name of another conservative firebrand who agreed to give her a hug.
“OK,” Pacheco said. “Thank you. So, um, and Joe Arpaio gave me a hug, by the way.”
Some leftist activists used the interaction to promote a narrative casting Coulter as evil and the illegal immigrant hoping to hug a potentially contagious stranger as a hero.
Aside from uncommon reactions like the one above, most of the responses — even among some who identify as leftists — described the incident as a nonissue being exploited by Coulter’s political adversaries.
“Is just possible that Ann Coulter doesn’t feel the need to hug perfect strangers for no reason,” one Mediaite reader wrote.
