A Texas man was taken into custody Wednesday after evading police for over two hours in a lengthy and sometimes slow car chase.
According to a press release by the Fort Worth Police Department, 42-year-old Jose Gonzales was with his aunt in her white Nissan Altima when she was pulled over by an officer. After Gonzales’ aunt stopped to cooperate, he got in the driver’s seat and began to drive away, leaving her aunt behind.
KDFW pointed out that Gonzales was recently released from prison and has a long criminal history, including convictions of unlawfully carrying a weapon, driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance, and aggravated robbery.
The Dallas Morning News Crime Blog sets the scene for the car chase, which lasted from 2 to 4 PM local time Wednesday and at times was as slow as 5 MPH:
The sluggish procession backed up traffic on both sides of I-30 for hours. Even though police tried to block access points to and from the highway, Gonzales managed to escape onto side streets.
Police tried to stop the car with traffic spikes, but after Gonzales drove dangerously close to the officer deploying them, they decided not to try again.
The Fort Worth Police Department’s pursuit policy does not allow officers to pass or block a fleeing vehicle, so they took a patient approach as the car went over curbs and weaved through traffic. But after Gonzales drove the wrong way on an exit ramp and picked up speed, they’d had enough.
Soon thereafter, a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit was deployed onto I-30 and immobilized the vehicle. Gonzales was taken into custody and to a local hospital for injuries. He has been charged with evading arrest/detention of a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance, both of which are felonies. Other charges could be forthcoming.
