Media and entertainment personalities spent much of this week discussing the very public transition of Olympic gold medalist and reality television star Bruce Jenner. His journey from living as a man to living as a woman called Caitlyn was front page news following a recent Vanity Fair cover story.
One of the countless celebrities to share his opinion on social media was Snoop Dogg. The rap legend proved even he is not beyond the left’s reproach when he posted the following image to his Instagram profile:
Though the post garnered roughly 140,000 likes, many saw it as disrespectful toward transgender individuals.
“So f—king disappointed in you,” one critic wrote, going on to declare “[c]alling her a f—king science project is transphobic as f—k.”
Several others, however, applauded the entertainer for addressing a harsh reality.
“Keep it G Uncle Snoop!!” wrote one supporter. “Truth hurts to these butt hurt fans! And guess what? You’re speaking it!!!!”
Debate over the controversial post extended to Twitter, where outspokenly gay blogger Perez Hilton called it “[a]bsolutely disgusting,” offering a link to his blog post about the issue.
Hilton blasted Snoop Dogg for “slamming Caitlyn [Bruce Jenner] with a crazy offensive and transphobic comment.”
He did acknowledge that the story about rapper Akon’s contributions in South Africa is important, though he said “there’s absolutely NO reason to belittle someone’s life.”
Possibly hoping to avoid the media backlash Snoop Dogg received, Mic reported that NBA star J.R. Smith posted the same message to his Instagram profile before quickly deleting it.
