China believes the United States should take in the bulk of the Syrian refugees fleeing the Middle East because it was U.S. foreign policies causing the problem. That is what is being broadcast on the Asian country’s state-run news agency, Xinhua.
“The United States should take its responsibility in the disheartening refugee crisis in Europe as its controversial Middle East policies resulted in wars and chaos that displaced large numbers of people,” aired Xinhua in criticism of President Obama’s foreign policy.
China said the United States has an “inescapable responsibility” in the matter of the refugees. As for China, The Hong Kong Free Press states that Chinese citizens oppose the idea of any refugees settling there.
“China is not responsible for turbulence in the Middle East, many Chinese people are still living in poverty and that the refugees won’t want to come to China anyway,” The Hong Kong Free Press notes in its article.
Xinhua pontificated in its article that intervention from the United States in the Middle East caused instability in the region, which led to the current situation. Instances cited by the news agency included ousting leaders Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.
“Wars and anarchy in the region have clearly pointed to the failure of the U.S. policies of the Middle East, a mistake that the only super power of the world is reluctant to correct,” according to Xinhua.
The news agency’s conclusion is that peace will come to the region when the United States “shoulders its responsibility and corrects its mistakes.”
Refugees began streaming across borders to flee wars and destruction across Africa and the Middle East. Many are seeking help in Hungary and Greece, but with plans to resettle in other parts of Europe. China said the United States has done nothing to relieve the situation, even though the U.S. has sent $4 billion in aid and has agreed to accept refugees.
“Now leaders of the European Union are between a rock and a hard place as the public is urging for more aids for the refugees while the EU countries are having difficulties dealing the flooding of refugees. However, the United States has done nothing substantial to deal with the problem,” Xianhu declared.
Britain announced that it will take up to 20,000 Syrian refugees in a resettlement over the next five years. British Prime Minister David Cameron pledged support after the public began pushing for the government to help those in refugee camps.
“In doing so, we will continue to show the world that this country is a country of extraordinary compassion,” Cameron said in a statement to parliament.
