Donald Trump is taking heat for not correcting a questioner at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire Thursday night, when the man asserted we need to “get rid” of Muslims and that President Obama is one.

“We have a problem in this country. It’s called Muslims,” said the first man Trump picked out of the 15,000 person crowd to ask a question. “We know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American.”

The candidate responded: “We need the question. This is the first question,” he said, to laughs as he appeared to uncomfortably allow the man to finish.

“We have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That’s my question, when can we get rid of it?” said the man.

Trump did not address the man’s statements about Muslims or Pres. Obama, seeming to only tackle his last statement about training camps. “We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things. And you know, a lot of people are saying that, and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking at that and plenty of other things.”

The GOP frontrunner almost immediately came under fire from rival candidates for his failure to correct the man. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Friday: “I would just tell you that if somebody at one of my town hall meetings said something like that, I would correct them and say the president’s a Christian and was born in this country. Those two things are self evident.”

Hillary Clinton tweeted:

Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, told CNN Thursday night that the candidate did not hear the question about Obama being a Muslim.

“All he heard was a question about training camps, which he said we have to look into,” Lewandowski said. “The media want to make this an issue about Obama, but it’s about him waging a war on Christianity.”

Fox News reports that the campaign also released a statement Friday. “The bigger issue is that Obama is waging a war against Christians in this country. Christians need support in this country. Their religious liberty is at stake,” the candidate said.

Earlier in the decade, Trump questioned whether Barack Obama had been born in the United States, prompting the president to release his birth certificate in 2011. He and others in the so-called “birther” movement still had doubts about its authenticity at the time. Trump no longer chooses to address the issue.

CNN reports that “Obama has noted in his two books, ‘Dreams From My Father’ and ‘The Audacity of Hope,’ that he spent two years in a Muslim school and another two years in a Catholic school while living in Indonesia from age 6 to 10.”

Candidate Obama came under intense scrutiny in 2008 for his relationship with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. The president attended his church for decades, and the reverend officiated at his and Michelle’s wedding and baptized their two children. Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Wright said the deaths of thousands of Americans were the nation’s chickens coming “home to roost” for past injustices like Nagasaki and Hiroshima. In a 2003 sermon, the pastor said God should “d-mn America — that’s in the Bible” because its government was killing innocent black people and giving them drugs and locking them away with “three strikes” laws.

Newmax reports that, as a politician coming up in Chicago in the 1990s and 2000s, Obama also had at least political dealings with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who Jeremiah Wright gave a lifetime achievement award to in 2007.

Barack and Michelle Obama withdrew their membership from Wright’s church in April of 2008 following the revelation of controversial statements and actions by Rev. Wright.
