One person was killed and two others wounded in an early-morning shooting that is spreading fear throughout Manhattan as New York City police engage in a massive manhunt.
Three men were shot at point-blank range in the heart of New York City Monday morning, outside of a McDonalds near an entrance to Penn Station at 35th Street and Eighth Avenue. The shooting took place at about 6:15 a.m. as Penn Station was surging with commuters. Police are seeking a silver sedan in connection with the shooting.
The Daily News quoted sources who reported that three men were seen fleeing the scene.
Police said a 43-year-old man was killed by a shot to the head, a 45-year old man was shot in the neck and abdomen and a 46-year old man was shot in the leg. The wounded victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, police said.
The victims had attended a methadone program at the nearby West Midtown Medical Group, said two men who are participants in the program. Police were interviewing officials and patients at the clinic, not far from the scene of the shooting.
The victims left the McDonald’s and were followed by the gunman, who opened fire after a dispute, said Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce. He said the victims were sitting in the McDonald’s when a heavy-set man in a black hoodie approached, spoke to them and left.
“This kind of thing doesn’t happen over here,” said Michael Gessow, 39, of the Bronx. “There’s a group of us here that don’t let things like this go down here. They were real nice guys, straight guys. I can’t believe it.”
“I have never seen anything like this happen…This is terrible,” said Richard Buckley of Queens.
