Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly did not hold back when expressing what he felt about Sen. Harry Reid’s decision to block “Kate’s Law” on the senate floor on Wednesday. The host dedicated the opening “Talking Points Memo” segment of his program to denouncing Reid’s actions calling him “a liar and a villain.”
On Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, re-introduced Kate’s Law, which calls for a mandatory 5-year sentence for illegal immigrants who commit violent felony crimes and then return once again illegally to the United States after being deported. The senator called for a unanimous consent vote, which meant if any senator rose to object, the bill would not pass. Reid rose and spoke in opposition to the law, citing its costs.
O’Reilly noted on his program that a majority of Americans support the legislation. A poll released by Rasmussen this week finds that 56 percent of likely U.S. voters favor the law. Twenty-seven percent oppose the legislation, and 18 percent are undecided.
“You will remember that 32-year-old Kate Steinle was shot dead by an illegal alien with seven felony convictions who had been deported five times. He was released from jail and protected from the feds by the sanctuary city of San Francisco,” the Fox News host reminded his audience.
O’Reilly played a clip of Reid’s remarks in opposition to Kate’s Law. “The new mandatory minimum sentences bill would have a crippling financial effect…This is yet another attack on the immigrant community,” the senate minority leader said.
O’Reilly took Reid to task for his duplicity and cynicism. “Mr. Reid is a liar and a villain,” he said. “This has nothing to do with the so-called immigrant community. This is about fixing a corrupt criminal situation. As far as cost is concerned, Reid has voted for trillions of dollars in government spending. His objection to Kate’s Law is a cynical joke.”
The Fox News host went on to call on the president to act, arguing it falls within his executive authority. “So tonight we call upon President Obama to issue an Executive Order mandating that Kate’s Law take effect,” he said. “If you care at all about justice, Mr. President, you will get Kate’s Law done.”
O’Reilly also reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to put the proposed law up for a full senate soon. The news man predicted if the law makes it to a full senate vote, it will pass and then will easily pass the House.
“Every Democrat that stands up and block’s Kate’s Law needs to be prepared to explain why standing with violent criminal illegal aliens is more important than protecting American citizens,” Sen. Ted Cruz said on the Senate floor Wednesday.
