In an era when Muslim terrorists are spreading carnage on streets from California to France to the Middle East, even the most mundane incidents can take on a sinister hue.
On Thursday, Western Journalism reported that two Muslim men entered a Walmart in Lebanon, Missouri, at about 3 a.m. and purchased 60 cell phones. The Walmart employees, apparently feeling uneasy about the unusual purchase and purchase time, notified authorities, who promptly informed the FBI.
The men couldn’t be held or charged with any crime as no actual crime took place, but the event was unusual enough to have even made the nightly news, with the television station and Lebanon police asking residents to report any suspicious activities, in light of the Dec. 2 terror attack in San Bernardino, California.
Cell phones have been used by jihadists as detonators in improved explosive devices, or IEDs.
Now, another strange occurrence has been reported to police. Dozens of propane tanks have been stolen from Independence, Missouri, and Lees Summit, Missouri, only a three-hour drive away from where the cell phones were purchased. The thefts occurred towards the end of November, and sources say the authorities were notified by email.
Fox 4 News, WDAF in Kansas City, spoke with a retired FBI Special Agent Michael Tabman, who said the authorities are probably trying to connect the dots between the two cases of stolen propane tanks and the high quantity of cell phone purchased.
Tabman theorized the theft is probably not terrorist-related because terrorists would be drawing unwanted attention to themselves by stealing the tanks instead of purchasing them, and that the use of propane tanks as an IED would not be the terrorists’ “tool of choice.”
