Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is dancing to a different tune than any of the other candidates who have faced attacks from fellow candidate Donald Trump.
Sunday morning, Trump took a jab at Cruz, someone he has largely had a non-confrontational relationship with since starting his presidential campaign.
“I don’t think he has the right temperament,” Trump said on Fox News Sunday. “I don’t think he’s got the right judgment. You look at the way he’s dealt with the Senate where he goes in there, frankly, you know, like a little bit of a maniac. You’re never going to get things done that way.”
Instead of firing back, Cruz tweeted a different type of reply. Cruz tweeted, adding a link to the video for the song Maniac from the 1980’s movie Flashdance.
In honor of my friend @realDonaldTrump and good-hearted #Maniacs everywhere: https://t.co/KOPIi4XTVt

His followers praised the gesture.
“I love it. That is hilarious,” a supporter using the name Blackdiamondskier posted on TheBlaze. “I liked Cruz before, but I loved his response. Cruz just keeps rising in the polls just like he did when he beat out the Progressive Dewhurst in Texas despite everyone saying it was impossible. Cruz has just the right temperament and the wisdom to do the job. Add honor and integrity and you’ve got an excellent candidate to represent the people in America!”
As Trump and Cruz have moved into a two-man duel for the lead in Iowa, Trump has thrown barbs at Cruz for the first time in the campaign. Cruz has been more restrained, despite requests to be more aggressive.
“It is amazing how eager the media is. … I mean the number one question I get day-in, day-out is please attack Donald Trump, please attack Donald Trump. And I’ll point out my approach to Trump has been my same approach to ever Republican candidate, which is that I am not interested in personal insults and mudslinging,” Cruz said during a Dec. 10 appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
There’s also sound political wisdom at work, a Cruz supporter noted.
“There’s never been any wisdom in taking on Donald trump and starting a fight with him,” said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.
