When President Obama and CNN host their town hall on guns Thursday night, they won’t have to worry about live TV showing the nation’s largest group representing gun owners shooting holes in liberal arguments.
“The National Rifle Association sees no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle organized by the White House,” NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said Wednesday, affirming the NRA’s rejection of its invitation to participate. The NRA boasts a membership of about 5 million Americans.
The White House has said that the town hall will include Americans of all beliefs on the hot-button topic of gun control. However, the general public cannot get tickets to the event at George Mason University in Fairfax., Va., which is by invitation only.
“This means CNN and the White House are completely shaping the narrative for the event by choosing the people who will participate. There’s no doubt the White House will also be crafting pro-gun control questions that are asked from carefully selected audience members,” wrote commentator Katie Pavlich.
The town hall event comes two days after Obama’s executive actions to restrict gun ownership, including expanded background checks for guns purchased at gun shows or on line.
The NRA has made clear its opposition to Obama’s proposals.
“The American people do not need more emotional, condescending lectures that are completely devoid of facts,” spokesman Chris Cox said. “The men and women of the National Rifle Association take a back seat to no one when it comes to keeping our communities safe. But the fact is that President Obama’s proposals would not have prevented any of the horrific events he mentioned.”
“The proposed executive actions are ripe for abuse by the Obama Administration, which has made no secret of its contempt for the Second Amendment,” Cox said. “The NRA will continue to fight to protect the fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed under our Constitution. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to become scapegoats for President Obama’s failed policies.”
