At a recent gathering of supporters in Iowa, Ted Cruz was approached by a young woman who admitted to being an illegal immigrant. The woman wanted to know if Cruz would deport people like her.
His answer was to the point and showed just what kind of leader he would be.
The exchange is featured in a video being pushed by the Democrat National Committee. Iowa Congressman Steve King can be seen standing next to Cruz.
The woman, Ofelia Valdez, can’t be seen in the video but is heard speaking in a nervous tone. “I’m worried about whoever comes next to the presidency and what’s going to happen to people like us,” Valdez said. “So, I just, you know, I think of myself as a part of this community.”
Valdez wanted to know if she is the type of person Cruz would deport.
It was clearly meant to be a “gotcha” moment, and the fact the DNC was there with its video camera strongly suggests Miss Valdez was a plant aimed at “getting” Cruz on his immigration stance.
But Cruz did not waver in his response. He looked straight at Valdez and unabashedly said yes, as president, he would deport anyone who broke our laws.
In fact, he even used his reply to put a dig in at Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) by noting that if the young woman was on the program she is an illegal immigrant.
“Well, listen,” Cruz said, “I would note that if you’re a DACA recipient it means you were brought here illegally, and violating the laws have consequences. And one of the problems with our broken immigration system is that it has created human tragedies. And there are human tragedies when people break the law.”
Cruz went on to say every nation on earth will deport illegals and then made the point “there’s no reason why America’s laws should have less respect than the laws of every country on earth.”
The Texas Senator concluded by saying, “We should welcome people who come following the laws but there are consequences for breaking the laws [emphasis added]. And that is part of what makes America the nation that we are.”
Cruz has laid out a comprehensive immigration plan on his campaign website, but certainly his main point has always been that our laws are not to be broken and our borders must be secure.
Transcript:
Valdez: As a DACA holder myself, I’m worried about, you know, whoever comes next to the presidency and what’s going to happen to people like us. So, I just, you know, I think of myself as part of this community and, you know, first day of presidency, you decide to deport, you know, people like myself, you know, it’s just very difficult to process.
Cruz: Well listen, I would note, if you’re a DACA recipient, that means that you were brought here illegally, and violating the laws has consequences. And one of the problems with our broken immigration system is that it is creating human tragedies. And there are human tragedies when people break the law, but I can tell you what the law is in every country on earth. If I illegally emigrate to England, or Germany, or France, or China, or Mexico and they catch me, they will deport me. That’s what every country on earth does. And there’s no reason that America’s laws should have less respect than the laws of every other country on earth. We should welcome people who come following the laws but there are consequences for breaking the law. And that is part of what makes America the nation that we are.
at least he abstained from using the word “great” in his reference to America
lost any claim to “great” decades ago and he knows this
perhaps he is smarter than we give any American politician credit for
