Despite his campaign’s recent foray into the realm of paid television advertising, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump reminded Instagram users of his knack for generating earned media this week.
The brash billionaire attracted significant attention – both supportive and critical – with a short video taking aim at potential general election challenger Hillary Clinton.
Building on his previous promises to continue hammering Clinton on her husband’s history of sexual abuse allegations, Trump’s latest social media ad linked the former secretary of state to other prominent figures who have faced similar scandals.
Titled Hillary and Her Friends, the approximately 12-second spot features a series of photographs displayed as Clinton attempts to make the case that she is the candidate best suited to champion women’s issues.
“Women’s rights are human rights,” she declared. “And human rights are women’s rights – once and for all.”
The images that flashed across the screen as the audio played, however, reminded viewers of a few ostensibly questionable associations Clinton has made throughout her political career.
Beginning with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, Trump’s video also focused on former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner and comedian Bill Cosby, both of whom have also been at the epicenter of sex-based scandals.
While the clip resonated with some Clinton critics, several other social commenters opted to use the same tactic to malign Trump based on those with whom he has been seen publicly.
