Liberal commentator Bill Maher believes the Democrats’ unwillingness to directly face the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorism could cost them the presidential election.
In a wide-ranging piece for The Hollywood Reporter published this week, the Real Time host writes that while he does not believe in Trump’s approach of banning all Muslims from entering the U.S., he believes the Democrats are not taking the problem posed by Islam seriously enough.
“So no, Donald Trump is not right — but he will win the election if the American people have to choose between his demagoguery and a party that won’t even say the words ‘Islamic terrorism,’” Maher contends. “I think the Democrats could lose on that issue alone, especially if there’s another attack.”
The commentator also chastises liberals for not recognizing the repression propagated in the name of the religion in many nations. “Forty countries in the world have some version of Sharia law. I just don’t understand how liberals who fought the battle for civil rights in the ’60s, fought against apartheid in the ’80s, can then just simply ignore Sharia law in 40 countries,” Maher writes.

“I am not anti-Muslim and never have been: I am anti-bad ideas. Killing cartoonists and apostates, these are terrible ideas and practices, and it would be lovely to think that they were confined only to terrorists. They unfortunately are not,” he adds.
The Real Time host relates that while he is sympathetic to the plight of the Syrian war refugees, “the answer can’t be to empty Syria and every other country in the Middle East where people live under repressive conditions and bring them all to Europe” or presumably the United States.
Maher notes even though America has a better record that many counties at assimilating Muslims, “let’s not kid ourselves: A certain percentage of them will be radicalized. The more Muslims in your country, the more that is a possibility.”
