A tech company is not a real tech company if it doesn’t own at least one Israeli start-up, or so it seems.
BlackBerry is making sure it can still be classified as one of the big boys with its acquisition of data security firm WatchDox.
The move will beef up BlackBerry’s mobile security and give enterprises more control over their data even after it leaves the corporate network. It will also enable businesses to securely connect employees both with each other and with corporate information across all mobile and desktop platforms.
“BlackBerry is constantly expanding the potential of data security so that it enables more collaboration and sharing rather than creating limitations,” said BlackBerry CEO John Chen. “This acquisition represents another key step forward as we transition BlackBerry into the premier platform for secure mobile communications software and applications, supporting all devices and operating systems. Together with last year’s Secusmart acquisition, Samsung partnership, our own internal development efforts, and now the acquisition of WatchDox, we now have capabilities to secure communications end-to-end from voice, text, messaging, data and now enterprise file-sync-and share.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Chen has been focused on beefing up its already renowned enterprise security offerings, so it is safe to say he would have been willing to pay a healthy amount to do so. The acquisition is part and parcel of Chen’s goal to focus on clients such as government agencies that require top-notch security.
This is BlackBerry’s second major investment in security in less than two years. The Waterloo, Ont. firm purchased German voice and data encryption specialist Secusmart last year. Secusmart is known globally for its anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organizations, enterprises and telecommunications service providers.
