It may sound cheesy but a small dream could have big potential for a pair of Denver-based professionals.
The pair — marketing manager Nichole Montoya and branding and design expert Molly DiCarlo — have launched Cheddar Up, an online payment system that could rival PayPal if enough people bite into it. The idea behind Cheddar Up is to create an easy way for the collection of funds from a group rather than the old system of using cheques and cash.
The idea took root three years ago and launched in 2013. Since then it’s grown to include 19,000 users.
Montoya told Tech Crunch the idea started because she was always writing checks to her children’s schools. As a working mother, she explained, it was slowing her down.
“I realized there was a gap here, and it would be great if there was a tool to collect money from groups that was created to be flexible and robust so that schools would use it,” she said.
That prompted the creation of Cheddar Up which, recently, updated its platform to make it even easier. Users need to simply create their own payment page to collect varying amounts or a standard fee. Once the page is active a unique URL is generated which can be distributed so payees only have to click on it, fill in a brief form and submit their payment.
Cheddar Up even makes managing the bills simple.
“We track who’s paid and how much with drill-down detail. You can even export to Excel. Our built-in tools do the work for you. Share your tab using Cheddar Post and reap the benefits of automatic reminders. Based on your preferences, Cheddar Post will send a friendly invitation to pay and even friendlier reminders to those who haven’t,” the site explains. “Finally, no more awkward follow ups.”
