Sometimes technology can be, well, creepy.
That’s likely the best description — aesthetically — of the robots being created by Hanson Robotics, a company that has made international headlines due to its life-like, interactive robots. One such robot, Han, made its debut earlier this week at the Global Sources Electronic Fair in Hong Kong. The creation turned heads and gathered attention due to its ability to answer questions, interact with attendees and identify facial expressions.
It’s pretty typical for Hanson’s creations.
“Our robots exhibit the highest quality expressions and interactivity in the world, fusing our advances in walking, talking robots who maintain eye contact, recognize faces and understand speech, hold conversations, and simulate a real person’s personality,” the company’s site explains.
That statement is backed up by a simple browse through some of its creations including a walking robot featuring an Albert Einstein head to a somewhat disturbing toddler robot created to examine the facial interactions between babies and mothers.
The idea behind the robots, reports CNet, is to create human interface in scenarios where an actual human may not be needed. For example, a robot could be used to greet visitors to a hotel or a restaurant. In addition, the robots may become useful educational tools.
The robots boast an impressive life-like quality with Hanson’s rubber-like skin, moving eyes and dozens of motors beneath the flesh-like rubber enabling countless expressions. Videos showing Han’s debut display its ability to carry on conversations and even refer to people by their names.
