Instagram is entering the live photo market with Boomerang.
The new video app, which is a mixture between a photo and a GIF, “lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected.”
“Capture a friend jumping off a diving board, defying physics as she flies back and forth through the air,” Instagram said in a blog post. “Transform an ordinary selfie with your friends into a funny video. Get that exact moment your friend blows out his birthday candles, then watch them come back to life again and again.”
Simply press a button and Boomerang will take over. The app takes a pile of pictures one after the other and then stitches them together to create a video that can be played forward or backward.
Pictures can be taken in portrait or landscape mode and the app will automatically save all images to your camera roll.
“We’re inspired by the visual stories you tell on Instagram. With looping videos and Hyperlapse, you experiment with motion in new and exciting ways,” Instagram said. “Now, with Boomerang, we can’t wait to see what you’ll create next.”
Boomerang is available for iOS and Android.
