Teradata UX is pioneering a new user experience concept dubbed “UX Engineering”, which offers a more efficient and streamlined process for the design of a more intuitive User Interface (UI) with faster User Experience (UX) results by designing prototypes in product quality code.
This is all made possible by the open-source UI Platform & Ecosystem Teradata has released, Covalent. Teradata UX Engineers such as Kyle Ledbetter (UX Arch) & Art Tawanghar (Sr. UX Engineer) design functional prototypes in Covalent during an agile sprint, alongside other Frontend Engineers, and go from mockup to merged feature within 2 weeks.
What are UX and UI?
According to Wikipedia, UX, is defined as follows:
“User experience design (UXD or UED) is the process of enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving the usability, ease of use, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the customer and the product.”
The terms User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) are often confused. This LinkedIn article will explain the difference more clearly.
As you can see, UX design is critical to your application’s success because UX design leads to the creation of the User Interface or UI, which you see on all devices and makes the product attractive and useful.
How the UX Engineer Concept saves time and money
The old-fashioned method of designing a user experience and user interface (UX/UI) involves these four time-consuming steps:
1. Sketching the process
2. Creating wireframe designs
3. Pixel Prototyping the UI Using Applications such as Sketch/Axure and etc.
4. Building the actual UI using programming code
With the new UX Engineer Concept you eliminate steps 2 and 3!
Developers can now design and prototype directly at the Code level, instead of using pixel ratios and creating wireframes and mock prototypes. This saves time, money and allows for faster delivery of the application.
This method can be demonstrated using many tools. However, we recommend Teradata’s Covalent® framework, invented by Kyle Ledbetter (http://kyleledbetter.com/), which is designed to be implemented by any UX designer with these qualifications:
1. Knows how to code HTML/Light CSS & JS both the UX and UI requirements
2. Possesses the latest knowledge of the most recent web technologies
3. Knows and stays up-to-date with all the recent HCI compliant changes
4. Knows how to connect the dots between all these technologies and create the ultimate Usage flow.
5. Directs the technology toward a smoother user experience and customer solution
6. Leans toward tweaking the technology to serve the customer’s needs.
7. Creates intuitive designs that can minimize the time customers spend learning the application.
Technical summary and Development flow use case
This concept can be described as cross-functional agile overlap. Here is an overview of the process:
• UX Engineer goes from Sketch/Axure => HTML/SCSS prototyping and UI building => light JavaScript
• Frontend engineers go from HTML/SCSS => heavy TypeScript => light Devops
Using Teradata’s Covalent framework, we can now:
1. Create cutting edge UI interfaces utilizing the latest web technologies such as Google® Angular2 and Material Design2 Libraries
2. Export css and js build files
3. Host on Plunker
4. Prototype directly in Plunker ( view in chrome: http://embed.plnkr.co/x80EeFrLwq7naP1aVW5S/ )
This article is intended to give you a quick overview on UX Engineer concept.
