(Before It's News)

Are you surprised to learn that search engine giant Google once hired a game designer, even though it does not create online games like Friv? This may be also one of the reasons why Neil Falstein has decided to resign to resign from his job as chief game designer for Google.

Falsteinposted on a blog that his final day at Google was April 6. The former head of game design has also stated that he is looking forward to the new challenge that is ahead of him, and this challenge will be actually making games for consumers.

The Task of Being Google’s Chief Game Designer

In the blog post, Noah Falstein also stated that when he was hired to work at Google to become Chief Game Designer, it seemed to be a really auspicious time for a company that is internationally known for technology to branch into the world of online gaming.

He further went to state that the opportunity for the technology giant to build huge, consequential games did not materialize, although the global market for online games has continued to grow. It is growing in diversity, geographic reach and size. According to Falstein, this was the deciding factor that led him to resign from the position.

Apparently, Falstein was originally hired to work on a project Google has had in the works to create its own games. However, the team never got around to completing this project, even though the popular game, Pokémon Go, originated at Google.

The Pokémon Go Connection

In fact, Pokémon Go was a concept that was brought into reality in Google’s Niantic Labs. This is an autonomous division that is overseen by John Hanke. Hanke is the developer of Google Earth. This division of Google was able to raise money from investors who are not affiliated with the company, and this money was used to create Pokémon Go. To date, the game has generated over $1 billion in profits for Google.

Although this may have seemed to be the best path for Niantic, the process actually showed that creating games within the company was not the best option. Falstein stated that he worked diligently to keep the momentum going, but realized he wants to create games for an online game company.

Neil Falstein has released a statement saying that even though Google may be working on game projects or has game creators within its doors, it is obvious that the company prefers to remain a major platform company.

Google Play Major Revenue Source

However, all is not lost with Google in the online game industry. The company still has Google Play, and around 30 percent of the company’s revenue is attributed to this Android platform. The Google Play app was one of the top 10 publicly traded online game companies in 2016. Google received over $4 billion in revenue.

He ended the statement by saying that he is not sure what is next on the horizon, and that is part of the excitement for him. He understands that the only way he will be able to stay competitive is to stay abreast of the changes in the industry and adapt to the environment.
