A swimming pool with the bottom made of glass was built on the 24th storey of Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Kangqiao Hotel in China. The pool protrudes from the side of the building so that swimmers can enjoy the view of the city underneath them, from the height of 24 storeys through the glass bottom of the pool. Thus, the hotel guests feel floating in the sky when they swim in the pool.

The unusual pool was designed by Singaporean architects of Chan Sau Yan Associates, who also designed the whole hotel. The pool is 30 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 1.5 meters deep. The owners did not expose the information about the cost of the construction.

There is a similar swimming pool in the U.S. – in Dallas. However, the American pool does not have a glass bottom – it only has a glass wall that protrudes beyond the perimeter of the building. To swim in this pool located on the 10th storey, one needs to become a guest of five-star Joule Spa Hotel.

There is quite a collection of unusual pools in the world. In Germany, there is Badeschiff, which translates as a “ship for swimming.” They docked an old barge on the Spree River and redesigned it into a pool. In summer, the people of Berlin enjoy swimming outdoors in pure water. In wintertime, the pool is covered with a roof.

In Australia, there is a pool called The Icebergs, at Bondi Icebergs Club. It is considered the world’s only pool for winter swimming. The season there begins on the first Saturday of May, which is a winter month in Australia. At first, Australian ice swimmers push huge blocks of ice into the pool, and then dive into the pool themselves. Bondi Icebergs Club was founded in 1929 by Australian lifeguards.

In Chile, there is a pool that is longer than one kilometer. The pool is located at San Alfonso Del Mar Hotel. Its depth is 35 meters. The square of the water surface of the pool is enough for holding sailing regatta competitions. The water in Del Mar’s pool is salty – it comes from the ocean through purifying filters and water heaters.

The pool at Golden Nugget Hotel (Las Vegas, USA) gives anyone an opportunity to swim among sharks, stingrays and other marine predators. This type of entertainment is not for the faint-hearted people, but there are plenty of those who want to try it. There is a little trick, though: tourists swim in the glass tube, which protects them from sharks.
