Unlicensed Zhejiang Processing Plant Explosion Kills 13
A dust explosion and fire on Aug. 6 at an unlicensed factory in Zhejiang Province left 13 people dead and 14 hospitalized.
The incident took place in a factory that polishes and processes aluminum locks in Ouhai District, Wenzhou City, and led to the collapse of five buildings, according to Zhejiang Online.
The plant was ruined, according to the report. Cement floors were upheaved and bricks were scattered everywhere; several people were pinned beneath concrete slabs. Rescue workers grouped together to lift the slabs and remove bricks by hand to prevent further injuries.
A nearby resident, Miss Tang, told The Epoch Times that she was struck by broken glass at around 4:50 a.m. when the windows of her home were abruptly shattered by an explosion as a mushroom-like smoke cloud rose about 100 meters away. She said: “The windows of my house from the first to the third floors were all shattered; only the fourth floor windows were left intact.”
Bloggers at first posted on Weibo that it was a “tannery explosion.” After preliminary investigations, however, it was confirmed that the accident took place in an unlicensed, family-owned plant with a “three in one” (factory, warehouse, and dormitory) layout.
According to Sina report, four passers-by were injured, including three children and a woman, in addition to workers.
