Chinese love all things that are joyous and auspicious. When greeting each other in the Lunar New Year, they will send good wishes to one another, and say things like:”Five good omens are coming your way.”

But what are these 5 good omens?

  1. The first good omen is longevity.
  2. The second good omen is wealth.
  3. The third good omen is health.
  4. The fourth good omen is virtue.
  5. The fifth good omen is a natural death.

Life is a fair. We all have some of the five elements above, but no one has them all. Some may have a long life, but live poorly. Some may have money, but fall ill. Some may have good health, but die young. Some may acquire virtue, but die the hard way… Only those blessed with the five good omens can enjoy a perfect life. Although no one in real life can live that way, the good omens reflect people’s adoration of such an ideal way of living. The 5 good omens are often seen in shops or homes where people put them on their door or wall during Chinese New Year.
