Hong Kong on High Octane: The Fastest if Not the Best Time-Lapse
Get ready for a tilt-shift, live action adventure through Kowloon, Lantau and Hong Kong Island.
Time-lapse photographer Dimid Vazhnik takes us on a whirlwind tour of one of the world’s most crowded cities, all set to The Prodigy’s “Climbatize.”
The Belorussian took the footage on his Canon 5D mark3 during two visits to Asia’s financial hub—the first was last February, well before the Occupy Central student protests started, and the second was in November at the peak of the Umbrella Movement.
As Vazhnik explains in the Vimeo summary: “First time I was so much impressed of this place because it’s the density of life.
“So many skyscrapers, people, cars on a such small square. The best view on Hong Kong is from the rooftops, that’s why most of the shots are from there.”
When he returned in November, Vazhnik said he became an “eyewitness” of the so-called Umbrella Revolution.
“I was impressed of courage and perseverance Hong Kong citizens. Some of these scenes got into video.”

Whether you live in Hong Kong or have only ever visited virtually, you’ll be impressed by Vazhnik’s careful sequencing of time-lapses interspersed with live scenes, and his amazing use of perspective.
I particularly enjoyed the night-time shots which include the atmospheric light show known as “A Symphony of Lights.”
It’s an energetic piece that captures the heartbeat of Hong Kong, especially with the student camp shining at its core.
