(Before It's News)

Litigation, language and culture.

Litigation, language and culture.

Last month I was on a Chinese Business Lawyers Association hosted panel at Cardozo Law School on China IP during fashion week. Our panel intensely debated whether Alibaba is trying hard enough to stop counterfeits on its various sites.

The Chinese Business Lawyers Association seems to be a little like the Republican Party in that they can’t seem to get enough of controversial debates. I say this because next Tuesday, October 13, they are teaming up with JAMS and the translation company TransPerfect to host a panel discussion on how language and culture impact international litigation. I have an inside tip that the panelists have widely varying views on the topics and that the chances are good for another round of intense disagreements and debate. And if you’re going to watch an intense debate, why not get some free CLE credits for it? That’s one thing the Republican debates yet to offer.

The panel starts at 6 PM at JAMS New York (620 Eighth Ave, 34th Floor in NYC). The panelists are Nicole Duclos of Covington & Burling; Samaa Haridi of Hogan Lovells; Geoffrey Sant of Dorsey & Whitney; and William H. Taft V of Debevoise & Plimpton. You can RSVP at [email protected].

We will be discussing the practical aspects of Chinese law and how it impacts business there. We will be telling you what works and what does not and what you as a businessperson can do to use the law to your advantage. Our aim is to assist businesses already in China or planning to go into China, not to break new ground in legal theory or policy.
