(No Sharia: Wikipedia)
We reported last weekend that the committee composing a new constitution for Egypt had voted to make Islam the state religion with Sharia the basis for all laws in the country.
This obviously upset the Coptic Christians in Egypt who make up approximately 10% of the population and left them concerned about their future.
Now this week American Muslim leaders and the American Coptic community have joined together in petitioning the Egyptians to drop Sharia law from their new Constitution.
Muslims and Coptic Christians within the United States are teaming up in a petition to the Egyptian government not to include Shariah law into its draft of the constitution.
The Islamic law, also known as Shariah law discriminates against those who practice other religions. …
Response: This is progress. It is really good to see Muslim leaders joining in with Coptic Christians on this important issue. The Copts consider Sharia to be a threat against the future of their historic Egyptian community. This also represents an unprecedented attempt by American Muslim leaders to influence the shaping of policy towards minority religions in another country.
It confirms and demonstrates that there are many moderate Muslims in the USA who believe in maintaining the freedom of religion in this country and are compelled by their convicts to promote it elsewhere. A real and welcome contrast to the Islamist radicals who get all of the attention. *Top
