I was listening to the news this week and there is a worry that the price of wheat and maize products will rocket soon due to the bad weather experienced by farmers. Bread may well become a luxury item. Most days bread of one kind or another comes into the diet of people. Toast is popular, sandwiches are a plenty in the supermarket shelves, fast food outlets rely upon the appeal of bread to support their products.
Bread is one of those commodities that is a big part of our living and yet we can take it for granted. With the crops failing and the prices going higher we may not take it for granted so much in the near future.
Bread like many products and things can easily be taken for granted. There are programs on television and cinema that are popular now, imagining a time in the future when all things taken for granted are removed from people. The basics of life are removed through alien invasion or natural or man made catastrophe! People are challenged to think about each other and the values of love, sacrifice, selflessness are brought to the surface of living again, while at the same time the base instincts of greed and selfishness rear up as well. Goodness lives side by side with badness and this seems to be a parable for human life.
The bread that is offered in the gospel is the very essence of goodness, the guiding and nourishing principle of our life here on earth. It is offered freely and enables the growth of love sacrifice and selflessness in those who receive this living bread with faith and reverence.
There is never a time when good and bad do not walk side by side; in our world, in our neighbourhoods or even in our own hearts… but the bread of Life, Jesus. is the sure truth that goodness wins over badness, that love triumphs over evil, that hope is stronger than despair, and that death is conquered by the life of Christ given on the altar of the cross.
Our taking of communion, receiving the bread of life without due thought or reverence and taking it for granted will allow the bad to clamour to the front of our own living. So we need to be on our guard to always appreciate and renew our love for Christ, present to us as the living bread.
May we never take this living bread for granted but welcome and receive the fruits of this living bread, reverently and regularly too.
