Genesis on Homosex: Beyond Sodom
“Upon this first, and in one sense this sole, rule of reason, that in order to learn you must desire to learn, and in so desiring not be satisfied with what you already incline to think, there follows one corollary which itself deserves to be inscribed upon every wall of the city of philosophy: Do not block the way of inquiry.”–Charles Sanders Peirce, 1896

In the contemporary dispute over homosexuality the Bible plays a less significant role than in the past because it is viewed as a book of miracles and supernatural revelation, having nothing to do with science and the modern understanding of sexuality. This is not based on an objective assessment of what the Bible says about homosexuality. It is rooted in the Enlightenment rejection of the Bible, and especially in David Hume's dismissal of miracles. Hume argued that unless universals in religion could be ascertained, no religious truth claims can reasonably be verified. Since Hume's time, anthropologists have identified several significant universals in religion, notably burial in red ochre, serpent veneration, and water shrines.< ![CDATA[

  • There are no universals among the religions and I wholly reject Hume’s premise that same must be ascertained in order to verify the truth of any particular religious doctrine.

Hume contends no religious universal(s) then no way to verify what religious doctrine is true and false.

God called a people out of Egypt, descendants of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, and offered to be their God and for them to his people. And it is through the Jews that God let himself be known to the world. (John 4:23 “… salvation is of the Jews”).

One man was shown God’s future accomplishment and that is Abraham who God told to sacrifice his son, but then an angel of the Lord called to Abraham as he was about to sacrifice Issac and God provided a ram for sacrifice instead. One man was shown a truth not to be found anywhere else.

Deuteronomy 4:19 to the nations, but not the Jews, was given the permission from God to worship the things in outer space, things of the earth and of the sea:

Jonah 3:10 “God saw their works that they turned from evil deeds …”

But the people of Nineveh were not told to stop worshiping Dagon. Many Gentile gods were okay in that they were not representative of evil as is the gods Baal, Moloch and Shiva. God had his prophet show up to the people of Nineveh spat up from the belly of a whale onto their shores and Dagon has a fish head.

Revelation 14:6 and Matthew 28:19-20 God permitted worship by Gentiles as aforesaid, but as of the death and resurrection of Jesus, God calls all to worship the one true God and to abandon evil deeds, for those who do evil. People who are good are already right with God.

We know good people are right with God because, among other writings, Revelation 5:9 people out of every tribe, nation, language and kindred make it to heaven and it is a fact not every of such knew about God or had an opportunity to know about God. Psalm 1:6 God knows the way of the righteous. Some of them did not know God, but he knew them because God knows the way of the righteous and they get eternal life because they are not evil doers.

If Hume wants to know the one universal truth it is the Jews had the true God to worship while all the nations gave themselves to worship those things in Deuteronomy 4 that God gave to worship – stars (astrology), seas (Dagon), sun (Apollo) as examples.

  • Pix

The bible doesn’t say anything about homosexuality, other than in the story of Sodom. And it’s not so much the men are homosexual, but they are rapists.

If your giant invisible fairy story character has such a downer on butt sex, why did it reward the Greek empire with Alexander the Great, who conquered the know world and then some?

It being all knowing and all, knew before the universe was created what was going to happen. And yet created it that way regardless.

So, your deity is either a narcissistic schizophrenic megalomaniac, or you are talking out of the darkest part of your butt.

You can always trust haters, to find someone to hate and vilify to make themselves feel superior at other peoples expense. You people make me sick.

    • @Pix, “The bible doesn’t say anything about homosexuality”

Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Read the Bible sometime, you might learn something.
