Scripture and tradition. The Pharisees came to Jesus and said: 'Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?' [In reply] he had something to say about their views on purification, and … then went on to say something about their view of tradition… In opposition to the opinions of the Pharisees he enunciated three important principles. First, that Scripture is divine, while tradition is human. Secondly, that Scripture is obligatory, while tradition is optional.
