(Before It's News)
When I was growing up as a Catholic aged 12 or so, I was always grateful for a shorter sermon. There were a couple of priests in the parish and when the bell was rung, to begin the Mass I would look up from the hymn book to check which priest was celebrating Mass. Naughtily I had nicknamed one priest, long wind, and the other short breeze! I was very glad to be in for a short breeze especially on a summers day!
The great thing about our faith in God is that its message can be understood by children like those mentioned in today’s Gospel, while at the same time keeping saints and scholars busy for a lifetime. A child can learn to say the “Our Father” and understand, while their have been countless treaties, books and reflections over the years, all trying to explain what God is.
A short summary of faith could go like this:
God exists and his love created the universe and God loves us.
God became man and died for us so that we can get to heaven.
We can get to heaven if we try our best to love God above all and our neighbour as ourselves.
We can’t do that on our own but God will help us if we ask him for the grace to do it.
God lives in us now, through the Sacraments helping us to face the trials of this life.
Our death will be like a sleep and when awake we will find that we are home with Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
This is our faith as members of Christ’s Body:
… able to be known by children
… able to be wondered at through the rest of our eternal lives!
…. A mystery rejected by some, but life giving for those who embrace it
Faith in Christ is a light burden and a restful employment!
