PORTO-NOVO, Benin — For 20 years, Communauté de Marie Mere de Enfants a Naitre (CMMEN, Community of Mary, Mother of Unborn Children) has been one of the most productive pro-life organizations in Benin and all of Francophone Africa.
CMMEN’s members operate in several different groups across the country, providing pro-life training, hosting conferences, and presenting parish-based days of recollection, focusing on the spiritual needs of the organization and the pro-life movement at large. In a strong recognition of their great work, their president was chosen as part of the church delegation to attend World Youth Day in Rio in 2013.
Key to CMMEN’s success is their ability to adapt and use technology. CMMEN’s numbers began to dwindle as members migrated abroad for travel, jobs, or marriage. However, the organization has never tired in seeking new ways of sustaining and building the mission.
Member Pathove Gaoungba, recognizing the decrease in membership, started a chat group using WhatsApp, a popular cross-platform mobile messaging app. Soon members were connecting with each other via mobile phone and sharing pro-life news and tips, reflections on Scripture, and quotes from Pope Francis. The chat group now has 100 members and is growing as friends and colleagues can more readily see the great networking that is taking place. Plans are underway for future events to consolidate the growing virtual community into an actual and active force for life.
CMMEN members ask that pro-lifers pray for their efforts to grow their youthful community and make them effective in promoting the Gospel of Life.
