The people of Chile are in dire need of prayers, following a vote that will forward an abortion bill on Tuesday, and a very serious earthquake that occurred the next day. As we write this, emergency workers continue to come to the aid of more than a million displaced Chileans, following the 8.3 quake that has killed at least ten people.
On Tuesday, the Health Commission of the Chilean Chamber of Representatives approved inclusion of the exception of rape among the cases in which abortion will be allowed in the country. Last week the Health Commission approved inclusion of the cases of danger to the life of the mother and mortal fetal deformity. The legislative bill will next be studied by the Constitution and Finance Commissions, and is expected to be voted upon by the Chamber of Representatives in a plenary session on October 8. If approved, the legislative bill will be taken up by the Senate, and if approved, eventually signed into law by the President of Chile.
The effort to allow abortion in the country is being led by the Socialist Party in Chile, along with President Michelle Bachelet, who is a party member. The majority vote, which occurred on the Catholic Solemnity of Our Lady of Sorrows, was a blow to efforts of Catholics and others who have seen Chile’s maternal health improve greatly in recent years even with very strong restrictions on abortion.
