(Before It's News)
The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life;
These words are taken from the gospel, from chapter 10 of John proclaimed at the Mass today.
Sheep are social creatures, with a tendency for flocking together, they have excellent hearing too, sometimes the wool may grow so wild that it can impede the hearing. Sheep listen to the voice of the one who feeds them, who cares for them, who looks out for them, a good shepherd has the concerns of the sheep at heart. Jesus is very much the image and personification of the Good Shepherd.
Jesus’ voice is spoken in the world through the scriptures, in the Eucharist, in the sacraments, in the life of the Church. That voice has the concern of the people under his care. His is a voice that says “Follow me, for I give my people eternal life.”
Sheep have a tendency to become fearful, fretful even, a loud unfamiliar noise can cause confusion, only the voice of the Good Shepherd can bring them back to the safe route in life. This fear can affect the Christian who seeks to negotiate a safe route through life. Louder more insistent voices can come along in the midst of life and only listening out for the voice of the Good shepherd can help to steer us safely towards eternal life.
A good idea is to cultivate the art of listening, of becoming still in times of prayer, of being calm and allowing the spirit to discern Jesus’ voice in the midst of the noisy lives that we lead. Sheep have excellent hearing, listening out for the voice of safety. May this listening spirit become part of our Christian life, so that we can truly hear and discern the reassuring and calming voice of the Saviour and Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
